Sanskrit to be made compulsory
AMRITSAR, Dec 21 - The Department of Sanskrit, Guru Nanak
Dev University here, at the two-day seminar sponsored by the
HRD Ministry took a unanimous decision for the promotion of
Sanskrit language. Sanskrit would be made compulsory at the
school level, vacant posts of Sanskrit teacher may be filled
in the schools, colleges and universities while a Sanskrit
academy would be established in Punjab. Speakers at the
seminar called for liberal financial assistance to be given
to Sanskrit students at each level. Also, the candidates
qualifying for Shastri exam from this university should be
awarded Shastri degree and may be entitled to get admission
in MA (Sanskrit) and B.Ed.
Similarly, scholarships should also be given to Sanskrit
students. Schools teaching Sanskrit traditionally should be
revived and be given the status of college.
