Havildar Ganga Singh, Indian Army.
One of the first of the overseas troops to be awarded the coveted Victoria Cross.
|
He is a fearless fighter at whom even the bravest enemy might quail, and was given the decoration for conspicuous valour. After killing a German officer, he seized the dead man's sword, and slew ten other men with it. He was wounded five times in these encounters. | |
| The In Flanders' Fields Museum comments : Never did a Ganga Singh get a Victoria Cross. This somewhat exaggerated story is based on similar facts regarding one Gagna, in Mesen. |
